Overview
AHC Downtown is a multi-family project located in downtown Calgary. The build took place in a highly constrained environment with limited access, high visibility, and strict safety oversight.
Range was responsible for erecting the structure using a prefabricated wall system, while adapting to major changes in hoisting and site logistics throughout the project.
Range Scope
Range was responsible for erecting the building using a prefabricated wall package and coordinating how materials were delivered and moved throughout the site.
What Made This Project Unique
This project required a full resequencing of the build when the planned tower crane could not be installed due to soil conditions. Range brought in two rotating telehandlers and adjusted the entire construction process to match the new hoisting approach.
The building also included a 27-foot-tall roof system at a 12/12 pitch (45°), adding complexity to installation at height. The site was located at 6 Ave and 9 St in downtown Calgary, with direct visibility from the OHS office in a neighbouring high-rise.
Challenges
-
Very limited access and minimal laydown/storage space
-
Steep roof installation at height (~75 ft)
-
High exposure in a busy downtown location during summer and Stampede
-
Ongoing visibility from OHS, increasing pressure on site execution
How Range Delivered
Range used its prefab facility to control how materials were prepared and delivered. Wall bundles were organized to move efficiently from the back of the building to the front, avoiding site congestion despite limited access.
Deliveries were timed precisely so trucks could enter, unload, and exit quickly, with traffic temporarily managed by a flagger. On average, unloading took about 35 minutes per trailer. The team also ensured that all bundles were sized and weighted appropriately based on lifting requirements and site constraints, including height restrictions from overhead structures in downtown Calgary.
Additional safety measures were implemented, including snow fencing at window openings and three-rail temporary guardrails with added protection.
